The Idaho Teen Reading Challenge is a chance for school and public libraries to challenge teens to read books outside of their comfort zone. It is put on by the Idaho Commission for Libraries with more than 700 Idaho teens from 62 different Idaho libraries participating last year.
October through April, teens are challenged to read 1 book from 8 of the following 10 categories – eight books total:
2024-2025 Categories are:

- New Genre: try a new genre.
- Sports Book: read a book about or featuring a sport.
- Memoir/Biography: read a book by or about a real person.
- Same Book as a Friend: read the same book as one of your friends.
- Setting You Want to Visit: read a book set somewhere you want to visit.
- Mystery: read a book with a mystery.
- 1-Star Review: read a book with a 1-star review.
- Look to the Future: read a book that makes you think about the future.
- Help Yourself: read a book that helps you learn something new.
- Free Choice: read whatever you want!
This activity is FREE and designed for all teens, ages 12-19.
Stop by the front desk of the Mountain Home Public Library to pick up a tracking form, bookmark, reading journal, book tote, and a pin or patch. Then check in at the library after completing each category to receive a new pin or patch. When they have completed the entire challenge, turn your tracking sheet back to the front desk at the Mountain Home Public Library to receive an official 2024-2025 Teen Reading Challenge sticker and be entered into a chance to win a teen gift basket.
